about the orinians what we believe in. We Orinians are the most sly among all of the packs. We take pleasure in knowing that we are by far the most able of wolves when it comes to stealth - and sometimes treachery. While we do not worship regularly like the other packs, we are extremely protective of our deity, Orion, who is the smartest and most regal of all the deities. Any blasphemy by Orion's name is punishable by banishment (or, if the transgression is terrible enough, death). While Orion is our special guardian, we also believe in the other deities - Andromeda, Cepheus, and Cassiopeia - but rarely ever worship these lesser gods.
Our Alpha is the Messenger of Orion, chosen especially by Him for his cunning and intelligence. As such, any and all messages from our deity are interpreted by our Alpha and relayed to the pack. Such messages are few and far between, but usually come in times of crisis or before war. Our Alphess holds the duty of judging those who have sinned against Orion.
what is expected. The first rule of living in the pack of Orion is that all is beneath Orion himself - and thus below the Messenger of Orion, his Highness the Alpha. Although it is not required nor expected of the Alpha to act as such (Orion nearly always chooses amiable Alphas), it is best not to anger him. The second rule, therefore, is to always do as you are told by your elders or those wiser than you.
Beyond the two golden rules, life in Orion is loose and reasonably relaxed. It is expected of all members - including females and excluding pups under one year of age - to know how to fight - and by fight, we mean fight "dirty," as other wolves would say. We believe that one should do whatever it takes to win, and often this means breaking the rules. However, one must also know when to fight and when to talk, and also when to make a sound retreat.
It is also good to have quick feet and an even quicker tongue - a trait all Orinians are known for.
our traits. Orion is a melting pot for wolven traits. Since the terrain is not overly difficult, larger paws typical of Andromeda are not uncommon, but not needed. Wings are much rarer than in any other pack, due to the thick canopy and closely placed trees - however, such appendages are not unheard of, but wolves with wings rarely use them unless they are blessed with a clearing.
Orion wolves are blessed with excellent night vision, needed for the early darkening of the forests. Therefore, their pupils are almost catlike, widening and narrowing according to the amount of light available. This makes them excellent nocturnal hunters.
life around us. mountain lion, black bear, grizzly bear, bobcat, coyote, red fox, elk, white-tailed deer, moose, feral pig, ermine, pine marten, ringtail cat, beaver, skunk, opossum, shrew, vole, norway rat, rabbit, chipmunk, squirrel, mole, muskrat, treefrog, bull frog, salamander, lizard, garter snake, pond turtle, salmon, bass, trout, hawk, owl, eagle, heron, duck, quail, finch, wren, thrush, warbler, raven, sparrow.
a word to outsiders. Foreigners (wolves that do not come from Cassiopeia, Cepheus, or Andromeda) are welcome within the boundaries of Orion for three days. If they remain there by their own will, they are either chased out or brought to the alphas to explain themselves. They do not often take in vagabonds, but will if said wolf has significant cunning. Wolves from Cassiopeia and Cepheus are treated with clear hostility but are still allowed audience with the alphas if they so choose. Andromedian wolves are usually killed on sight unless some sort of treaty or message is in order.

orion ranking system messengers to the gods his highness the alpha. orion's leader, mate to the alphess; messenger and interpreter of orion our lady the alphess. "judge, jury, and (sometimes) executioner;" mate to the alpha the wisest. the advisor to the alphas and often the teacher of the new generation; serves until the day he/she dies, upon which a new wisest is appointed according to both their wisdom and wit. eats second at any kill. higher existence assassins. exactly as their title says, the assassins of the pack. they are never used within the pack unless treachery against Orion is suspected, and are usually sent into other territories as scouts. there are only five assassins at one time, and these are often the stealthiest and best fighters of all the orinians. their identities are shielded, but not completely unknown - there are constant suspicions of potential assassins. viper-tongues. more of a novelty title than anything, these wolves (three at any one time) are recognized for one year for being proven through an annual contest as the quickest - and sharpest - of tongue in the pack. they are precise with their words and can verbally shred you up one side and down the other without you knowing what happened for several days. barons and baronesses: those in charge of sections of the orinian army. they are often ruthless fighters and command their troops with iron fangs. baronesses are often more feared than barons. the legion. commanded by barons and baronesses, members of the legion are often called Orion's Soldiers. medics. healers; they are taught in part by the wisest but younger healers are often taught by more experienced ones. prevalent hunters. self-explanatory; they catch all the food the pack needs, and are always very good at what they do. all hunters know how to conserve their food supply so that future generations will have something to hunt. lesser scouts. like assassins, except they do not engage any foe and work only within the boundaries of the orion territory. their identity is well known and often they are the most skittish of wolves in the pack. enforcers. wolves who dispense lesser punishments when needed, such as to pups when they snap at their elders or when two or more orinians get into a brawl. they also bring large issues to the attention of the alphess. brutes. male members of the pack of orion without any particular job. take up any necessary jobs or may even be moved to another rank if those groups need assistance. femmes. female members of the pack of orion without any particular job. take up any necessary jobs or may even be moved to another rank if those groups need assistance. new life, new tricks nursers. females expecting or nursing pups, or who have chosen to care for pups and yearlings as a job. apprentices. young wolves between two and one year of age. they are expected to learn the ways of Orion from their elders until they reach their second year, when they will be considered for special jobs within the pack. pups young wolves under one year of age. insignificant blasphemers wolves that have committed the highest transgression possible for orinians - denying or cursing orion. they are usually executed immediately, but may be imprisoned for several days, often dying of starvation or dehydration banished those expelled from the pack for one reason or another ash orinians that have died and been cremated by any pack member with the power of fire. if no member has such power, the corpse is buried. the dead are honored according to their status, achievement, and reputation.

international relationships andromeda. Orinians are incredibly hostile towards all Andromedians. If the scent of Andromeda plagues your fur in the presence of any wolf from the pack of Orion, it is inevitable that you will be in a fight for your life. almost the only way to avoid such a battle is to quickly state your business - and that's only if you're on the way to see the alpha and the Orinian you've met isn't a zealot. all in all, it would be unwise to travel directly to Orion if you've just been to or escaped Andromeda.
cassiopeia. Although many Orinian wolves are disgusted by the pacifistic traits that are the hallmarks of a Cassiopeian, wolves from this pack are the most welcome in Orion of all wolves in the region, simply because they cause very little harm to anyone or anything. Cassiopeians can carry out conversations with Orinians without fear of retaliation or even sarcasm, but it has often been suggested among natives - mostly birds - that those of Orion think themselves superior to Cassiopeians. Nothing of such a rumor has ever been proved.
cepheus. Cepheus and Orion have a love-hate relationship. Although they are the most likely to unite under dire circumstances, Orinians despise Cepharians because of their dedication to honor, which has some standing in Orinian society, but not much. Cepharians also despise Orinians for their apparent lack of honor, and so on. They are both fighting packs, but Orinians prefer sharp words to sharp fangs.
vagabonds. Orion is less accepting of wandering wolves than most packs, but given the circumstances they will accept perhaps two or three a month. Vagabonds, like wolves of regional packs, are guaranteed welcome in Orion packlands for three days. If they are found there afterward, they are taken to the Alphess, who questions and observes the offender before considering offering a place in the pack. If such an offer is refused or not given at all, the wolf is escorted - or chased, in some cases - off of Orinian land. Wolves that are escorted or chased away can end up in bordering packlands or in the wasteland at the discretion of the ones escorting.
