Your Spirit Guide and You:
A Brief Guide

Choosing: There are many ways to find your spirit guide or totem animal. In Cassiopeia, there are a few tried-and-true techniques we use to make contact with the spirits. The most traditional way is to use guided meditation with our Shaman. He will guide you until your mind frees itself from your earthly body. You will enter the astral plane, and may begin the search for your spirit. Since it is a very private moment, our Shaman will not follow you on your journey. You will have to find your new guide on your own! Even if you do not find your spirit or totem right away, take heart: it can take many sessions to find your spirit, or it may take only one.
You might also try finding your guide without the Shaman's assistance. Looking to Mother Earth and what is around you might give you a clue as to the nature of your spirit guide. For example, if there always seems to be a sparrow nearby when you are doing something particularly difficult, it just might be your totem. You can also meditate on your own, though it is easier with another to guide you, unless you have practiced meditation on your own and can reach the spiritual plane independently.
Rest assured, you will know when you have found your guide. Though other spirits might attempt to lure you away by pretending to be your Spirit, they do not know your heart as your own spirit guide will.
Temporary Or Lifelong?: Some guides are with us for only a short amount of time, while others guide us for our entire lives. Temporary spirit guides may come to you in dreams or manifest in our world, in order to help you through a certain phase or trial in your live. When their task is complete, they will leave so that another may take their place. Their leaving is not something to be frightened of - there is another waiting for you to find them.
Our lifelong spirit guides, on the other hand, have chosen us for a specific purpose. They can help open us to the nature of the Great Spirit; they can heal emotional wounds that no one else can reach, because they know us so well. You can always learn from them, even when it seems we have no need for their skills. Their comfort and protection is lifelong. Never shun a spirit's assistance.
Spirit Animals and Meanings: When a pup is born in Cassiopeia, the Shaman assigns them a birth totem - this spirit will guide them until they are old enough to begin the search for their own, personal guide. If you are expecting pups and know what their totems are, please choose here the totem for your young ones. Remember that these are only temporary.
If you are still looking for your spirit guide, you may find them a easy-to-use, detailed list here or a longer, less comprehensive list here
If you cannot decide, our Shaman will be happy to help you*.
But What Do They Do?: The Cassiopeia believe that spirit guides and totems are our teachers in life. Each has a lesson to teach, advice to give, a message to deliver, and strengths to sustain us. You need only call upon your spirit when you have need, and they will help you. Learning from them will only enhance your ability to take on their characteristics. They can open your mind to the nature of the path you walk, and teach you to take on their characteristics. They will bring us messages, as well as help us face our fears.
They are a way of life, our teachers on the path back to the sky. One need only pay attention, and life will be more rich and vibrant than ever before. A mother calls upon the spirit of the bear to defend her pups, a dreamer may call upon the beaver to give him clarity in dreams. The spirits hold the keys to the world. It is only right we learn from them when they work so hard to reach us.**In other words, if you don't know what your spirit guide for your wolf might be, just let me know, and I'll find one that hopefully suits your character's personality. Remember that not all characters will have 'cool' spirit guides! Salmon are just as important spiritually as the Bear in Cassiopeia!
